Looting at Dahshur and Its Implications

Over the past few years we have heard many stories on looting in Egypt as several important sites have been pillaged in the background of the current political situation and climate there. Last year I wrote on the sad happenings at the site of El Hibeh, where systematic looting did grave damage to the site. On Facebook, several images of the state of the site circulated and had me realize, how serious this problem is. Now, another such story is spreading through Facebook and the Egyptological world. At the site of Dahshur, a very important site in the Old Kingdom, such systematic looting is happening once more.

In a few weeks, I will be teaching my first course on Egyptian religion for SFU Continuing Studies. We will be exploring several aspects of religion and learn about the many facets, forms and meanings a god in Egypt could have and could have taken. In particular, the central theme of this course will be to explore the continuous debate of science vs faith or myth vs reality, perhaps having to reconsider some of the preconceptions we currently hold.

Back in April, when I spoke at the Surrey City Center Library for SFU Continuing Studies, I was invited to also give a lecture at their Saturday forum in December. It was a startling experience as I was told this lecture would be visited by 200 attendees. Suffice to say, over the course of the summer, I closely watched the process of registration hit 200 by July and before the summer was over even the waiting list had filled up. Suffice to say, when I did show up to give the talk, around 130 persons showed up.

I presented a brief history of Egyptology, where I supported the idea that Khaemwaset was the first Egyptologist.

A Reminder of Local History: the Case of Saint Mary’s Hospital

Since the launch of Apple’s iOS 6 in September, many articles and blogs have been written about the supposed weaknesses in the design and overhaul of its Maps apps for both the iPhone and iPad. In Dublin, the airport was apparently located in a farm (1) and in many other places around the world similar mishaps happened. Something like this also befell me and my wife as we moved into our new flat just a few weeks ago. Near our flat, Apple Maps shows Saint Mary Hospital as shown in the image below:
